Best friends who shared everything only to find themselves in a situation that is a parent's worst nightmare for the most part. A decision made, causing a rift that took over a decade to fully heal. A longing. A yearning. For someone who sees you. All of you. The good, the bad, and the ugly...and they love you anyway.
Summer and Echo. That's their story.
Imagine falling in love one summer and having it ripped away from you for 15 years. Now imagine getting an invitation to watch that love marry someone else.
The book opens with a wedding, but unlike in 12:01, this one is actually the FMC's wedding. Thing is...Summer doesn't show up.
We dive into why Summer can't marry DeShawn and why no one knew where the runaway bride was except Echo.
I started this book via audio and had to switch to kindle because Summer's secrets sounded too much like some of my own. To hear them spoken aloud was something I could only take so much of.
As a parent, I understand downplaying teenage love as something fleeting, but as an adult, I also know that love doesn't care how old you are when it grabs you. Right place, right person, wrong time is a thing.
This book took me through a rollercoaster of emotions, including aggravation because it took so long to reveal the reason behind the 15 years apart. This book tugged at my heart strings, especially as Summer has a come to Jesus with her mama.
Favorite Quotes: "Love, when it's real, has a way of finding you no matter how far or fast you run." and "The heart leads the way, even when our mind tells us to take another path"- Summer's Mama.
This conversation comes during the aftermath of what Summer has done. She has had to face herself and her ex-fiancé. Being asked "What do you want" can be earthshattering when you've been a people pleaser out here living your life to make other people happy. Following a blueprint that builds a home you don't want to live but everyone thinks you should be ecstatic about. Settling for a life with stability...but no butterflies. Especially when what you want has the potential to hurt someone you care deeply about.
If you are looking for a book filled with yearning, and a little drama, Summer's Echo is for you.
