My first book for 2026 is In His Corner by Alexandra Warren via Audible. It's a sports romance recommended on Instagram by @taliacadet. I've read sports romances before, but I think this is my first boxing one. If you don't have time to sit and read a physical copy or e-book, Audible is a great compromise if you can swing it. And if you can hear in cursive (high speed), even better.
It took me a while to adjust because as a mom, I've got the art of tuning out voices down pat.
However, when I'm in the car or bound to the couch by laundry, audiobooks save me.
One of the things I enjoy about Alexandra Warren's writing is that the people feel relatable. Bree is a blogger, and Princeton is a boxer. Bloggers and boxers feel like a lifestyle I might actually know. 😏 As opposed to books about kingpins and madams that require me to stretch my imagination a bit. Although they do make me want to pretend I'm bout that life.
I'm not.
Anywho, on to Bree and Princeton's story. They meet on a whim. Bree is assigned this story to broaden her career, and Princeton is smitten. The common thread you will notice in a lot romance books is that they fall fast and they fall hard. I'm cool with that though. There is a pregnancy trope in this one which is typical as well as mentioning of abuse. But the abuse isn't detailed out. I love a Female Main Character (FMC) that don't take no shit, even if she does love them Male Main Character (MMC).
My favorite quote? In the middle of another apology from Princeton, Bree tells him, "...Attacking me, the person who's always been in your corner, is no longer an option."
Princeton comes with emotional baggage due to his relationship with both parents and he does what most people do. He lashes out at the person closest to him and expects them to forgive him because he says he's sorry and didn't mean what he said. The fuck? How many times have you found yourself on the end of someone's verbal assault because they can't take it out on the person they are really angry with? How many times have you done it?
Reconciliation happens, but not before some intense confrontations across the board. The only thing I disliked was Bree constantly coming at Princeton about his occupation of choice when she knew what the deal was before getting involved. Girl... But also, as anxious as I was during the fight scenes, I can't imagine what they would feel like in real life.
I don't give ratings because they are subjective and I will never want a person to not pick up a book based on my opinion of it, but if you are looking for a standalone, In His Corner isn't a bad place to start. And yes...they hunching.
