Book Review: Implied Consent by KC Mills

I've read a few books by KC Mills, and I am a fan of how she writes. The characters are relatable unlike so many others I've come across.

Skylar Addison - Sports Attorney. HBIC. Also...dumb BIC.

"Don't shit where you eat" is a thing.

Miss Skylar Addison does just that and when she breaks up with her boss Conrad, he fires her. "Restructuring", they say.

Now Conrad is an ass for this, of course, but Now listen...Sailor is my kinda wing woman. She tells Skylar to get up to Gray off GP and worry about feelings another time.

Skylar is an Addison and the name carries weight in the world of law, but like most kids, she doesn't want to ride the family name to secure her legacy. That's why she ended up working for Conrad's firm.

I get it. One doesn't want to forever be in our parent's shadow, but also...they do it.

Gray Jordan - Retired football player, entrepreneur, big brother to Jenna

Gray is the perfect example of why we bring old baggage to new relationships. When your ex tries to destroy your reputation by accusing you of the worst things imaginable, and in turn ruins your career, I can see why it would be hard to trust another from jump.

The couple meet at Gray's restaurant...Gray's. (Unique, right?) It's the day Skylar gets terminated, and she is in a mood. Well, she basically insults Gray's food by ordering a burger and then asking them to take everything off the burger that makes it "the" burger. Nothing like a little tension to start off the relationship.

Skylar is pissed because Gray throws the food away and brings the OG to her, so she doesn't trash their food without tasting it as it's meant to be tasted. She picks up her face because the burger is great.

Later after trying to get into a new hookah spot with her sister Sailor to "cleat chase", they end up back at Gray's to do some much needed drinking.

Jenna, who noticed Gray checking Skylar out after the first visit, tells him that she's back with a friend. After creeping on them via the security cameras, he decides to come out on the floor. Skylar embarrasses herself by assuming Gray just works there.

Gray tells them the drinks are on him, so you already know how that went.

Sailor is my kinda wing woman, ya'll. Before they leave Gray's, she gives the bartender Skylar's number to pass along to Gray. Skylar has a rule about not dating athletes after spending so much time helping clean up the messes that they get themselves into. Sailor basically tells her nobody is saying get married...just hunch.

Throughout the book, we deal with various themes, such as parental death and suicide attempts as we get to know the background of each character.

As the relationship continues to blossom, Skylar is gun shy about jumping to something new because of Conrad, but Gray is applying pressure.

And let's not forget that Skylar is dealing with how to move forward in her career since Conrad had her sign a 12 month noncompete if she ever found herself not working for them.

Coming from a family full of lawyers though, he should have added more to the fine print because Sailor and Skylar find a loophole, so she begins the process of opening her own firm.

Now listen...one thing any woman in my circle will tell you is, don't put me in a position where a bitch know something I don't. And why does Gray do just that?!?

Skylar is his plus one to a wedding, and his ex, Shelby, is in the wedding party. Sir...why didn't you tell her this?!?! The night goes great until Shelby corners Skylar in the bathroom. Cue the drama. Gray has been off the grid since the scandal with Shelby, so this is all the blogs need to create a story.

It all works out in the end, but...why would you do that?

Favorite Quote: "Women lie, Gray. Especially when it means we get part of a man who we want all of but know it's not possible." - Yalena

This quote is from the girl Gray used to mess with after she sees the photos of him and Skylar. During their last encounter she told him she could tell he was distracted, but this was before he and Skylar decided to be exclusive.

This quote is so true for young Mon. Baby, she didn't know any better.

This book is book one of a three book series. The next one is about Skylar's brother Torrance, so I'm assuming book three is about Sailor.

One of the things I love about this book is while yes, these people have money, it's not in a way that seems unrealistic and it didn't start in the streets. Hopefully the trend of semi-normal continues with book 2: Informed Consent.
